Biographies:

Ms. Tandler came to the U.S. from Brazil on a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a Master's Degree in Librarianship from Emory University in Atlanta. She has been Head of the New Americans porgram since 1980. The Program works with residents of Queens whose native language is not English. It has received national recognition as a model library program has won several awards. Ms. Tandler has Special Advisor status on the Standing Committee Serving Multilingual Populations of IFLA, and has served locally on the Advisory Boards of the Queens College School of Library and Information Services Minority Scholarship, and of the New York City Office of Immigrant Affairs.

 

Mr. Gitner has been Assistant Head of the Program since 1996. Prior to that he has worked as Library Director of the French Institute/ Alliance Francaise in Manhatten for over 10 years. In 1995, he was named Chevalier for distinguished service in promoting French language and culture in the United States. He currently serves as Chair of the Sister Libraries Committee of ALA international relations Round Table, as Past president of the Ethnic services Round table of NYLA, and co-chair of the Multicultural Special Interest Group of METRO. He has also beena consultant for the Swiss Institute, NY, the New York Society Library, the Instituto cervantes, NY, and the Bibliotheque de Documentation Internationale Contemporaine in France.

 

The New Americans Program of Queens Borough Public Library serves residents of Queens whose primary language is not English. The Program works closely with ethnic community organizations and branch libraries to assess local needs, link residents with existing neighborhood and systemwide library services, and create new services. The Program is made up of 5 major components:
