DIVISION REPORTS:
DASL:Beth Gates reported. Claudia C. McGivney sent the following email. DASL's program, Humor and Information Literacy: Practical Techniques for Library Instruction, held on 9/23 was successful.
RASD:Robert Cognato reported. The elections for VP/President Elect and Secretary were held in September. The candidates were Cathi Nashak and Edana Cichanowicz for VP/President Elect and Sara Bedell for Secretary. The results were a tie for VP/President Elect. Each candidate received 52 votes. According to the RASD Constitution, a tie vote then goes to the RASD Executive board to decide. I reported to both candidates with the result, and Edana graciously decided to withdraw from the election. The RASD VP/President Elect for 2012 is Cathi Nashak and Sara Bedell will be the RASD Secretary. Sara received 97 votes. Total Ballots sent out were 313 with 97 going to home addresses or colleges/universities. 105 ballots were received. Steven Spataro will be the RASD President for 2012 and Megan Sala-James will be the RASD Treasurer in her 2nd year of a 2 year term.
The RASD annual dinner was held on Thursday evening October 6th, at the Setauket Pastaria. The event was a huge success. Member at Large Belle Baxter did a fantastic job making all the dinner arrangements and securing some great prizes from vendors. Henry Osmers a Lighthouse Historian gave a wonderful talk about the history of Montauk Lighthouse. Finally we had a 50/50 raffle followed by an exciting Chinese auction. Many thanks to all members of the RASD board, who made the dinner a memorable event. 28 people signed up for the dinner.
The next RASD board meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 19th at SCLS, during our annual Health Concerns Breakfast. Guest speakers Dr. Stephen Dewey and Dr. Carrie Bisigani will be speaking about how substance abuse affects the brain. Breakfast will be served starting at 9am.

LONG ISLAND LIBRARY CONFERENCE:Beth Gates reported. Virginia Pfeifer sent the following email. The Long Island Library Conference committee had its meeting at the Melville Marriott on 10/13/11. The committee toured the facility and planned locations for exhibits, programs, associations, dining & refreshments, and possible configurations for restroom use. From past evaluations, restroom facilities have always been a major lament among attendees. This will always be an issue when an event has a very structured schedule; everyone is using the restrooms at the same time. The Marriott is willing to "re-arrange" bathroom use to best suit our needs the day of the conference. The Marriott is also providing a room free of charge for our keynote speaker as well as one night's stay as a raffle prize. Overall, our experience with the Marriott so far has been very professional.
The committee is working hard on finding just the right graphic to reflect our theme–"Everyday Superheroes at Your Library". We believe this theme will lend itself to numerous topics for programming should associations choose to use it. Our inspiration is derived from the fact that our keynote speaker has her very own action figure. She must surely be a hero to achieve such status and the committee would like to tap into her action figure energy as a source of motivation for professional development.
This year, Nassau is handling the funds for the conference. We anxiously await a recommendation for the use of Pay Pal as this will require a joint effort with the treasurer of NCLA. We intend for Pay Pal to be a means of payment for not only attendee registration, but also for vendor registration. For the latter, we need to move on this pretty quickly so that forms can be updated with new information. If NCLA has doubts about using Pay Pal, the committee respectfully requests a compromise in which pay pal would be used solely for vendor registration. Please keep in mind that we lost a vendor last year because we did not have the ability to accept payment by credit card.
With regard to the vendor registration letter, there is another matter about which the committee would like to open up a discussion. The committee seeks to make as many involved in the conference experience as satisfied as possible. With that in mind, we would like to propose that the format for the NCLA directory for the vendors be changed to a digital format. Vendors would find a flash drive extremely convenient (it has been requested) and we would ask that the cost of the directory in this format be significantly reduced for the conference. The directory is the largest expense outside of the venue and keynote speaker. We are seeking to reduce the costs associated with the conference as much as possible to insure the sustainability of the conference while keeping the attendee registration at an extremely low price. Of course, additional directories in print would be available for purchase if vendors choose to purchase it. Thank in in advance for your full consideration.
Finally, the positions for your Long Island Library Conference Committee are completely filled.

SCHOLARSHIP:Beth Gates reported. Angela Richards sent the following email. The Scholarship committee has selected a recipient who is pursuing her MLS. Lee Ann Finn is completing her degree at Queens College with a straight A GPA and has worked at Middle Country Public Library since 1997. Currently, the committee is reviewing applications for the Support Staff Award. The recipient will be notified at the end of the month. Many thanks to Celia Ann Vollmer who has agreed to assume the role of Scholarship Chairperson. A support staff member is needed to replace her spot on the committee. The Chairperson doesn't vote for the scholarship recipients. Her responsibility is to promote and facilitate the application and selection process. Thank you to all SCLA members throughout the years and for your support of such a worthy cause. I was rewarded every time I saw the appreciation on the faces of the past recipients.
Teri Hatred volunteered to take over Celia Volmer's position on the scholarship committee.
